Notice: No kill area
No trophy trout in Valencia, Spain, but still a great river with Browns up to 45-50 cm.
And beautiful landscapes! What to fish?
Very simple: brown or rainbow trout!
Arriving early in the morning?
“Early in the morning is often a great time to catch the most beautiful trout because the days can get very hot in this part of Spain!"
Definitely yes!
We arrive at the first large flat where we used to catch nice fish early in the morning.
Early in the morning is often a great time to catch the most beautiful trout because the days can get very hot in this part of Spain.
To effectively fish these flats, a formidable lure is the Cultiva by Owner because it perfectly imitates the small Comizo barbel, which is a significant part of the trout's diet (a kind of Spanish minnow).
Where and when to fish ?
Here is the story of one of my fishing game on the Turia (in autumn 2022). I regularly go there for fishing brown trouts and the scenario is regularly similar. A great great spot !
Right from the first casts, the trout are active, and the first nice one was caught within 15 minutes of fishing.
Today, the trout are really active, and the small suspending jerks seem to be the solution of the day.
But gradually, the wind picks up, and in this narrow valley, the gusts can be very powerful. After a short break during which the sun rose, the big trout were out, and as soon as we resumed, a first trout of 40++ bit the hook.
“The Turia is full of Brown Trout between 20 and 30 cm. But it's not uncommon to catch ones over 40-45 cm. In "no-kill," of course!"
Unlike the early morning, the trout grew tired of the jerks, and gold spoons in sizes 1 and 2 became very effective. It is not uncommon to catch more than 3 fish in the same spot because the food is abundant in this river. Sight fishing is a more than viable technique in this clear water river as it originates from the reservoir. Thanks to this, the trout benefit from a nearly constant current throughout the year and a consistently cool temperature, even in the height of summer.
Good to know / Where is the fishing spot ?
The fishing spot is an hour's drive from Valencia, Spain (no public transport). A fishing license is required for freshwater and the sea (two different licenses), which you can obtain from a fishing store. In Valencia, I went to Pesca Shop (Cabanyal area).
Please note that it takes 24/48 hours to receive your license.
Alternatively, you can also purchase a day permit at one of the three Decathlon stores in Valencia and buy a day permit (12 euros) in a partner "coto" (fishing area) like Bugarra. Convenient!
Also worth visiting in the area
The rock paintings in Chulilla
Water route (Ruta del Agua) in Chelva (trout)
Further away, Benageber reservoir (pike and black bass)
thanks, going to Valencia in a month, gonna take a rod or two with me !
