Los Calderones (50 minutes from Valencia, Spain) is a truly amazing spot for wild rainbow trout. Occasionally, you can also catch some beautiful brown trout there.
You'll get immediate bites from fish over 30 cm!

Where and how to fish there ?
It is situated in the municipality of Chulilla, about an hour from Valencia. Chulilla is a typical little village and the starting point for various hikes. I've often seen this village in the top 10 lists of the most beautiful sites in the Valencian region.
Los Calderones is a fishing stretch managed by the Valencian Community, exclusively "no-kill," with single barbless hooks. In other words, it's 100% sport fishing. You'll find it by driving through Chulilla towards La Ermita. The "Tramo 3" is located under a bridge shortly after La Ermita. I recently discovered this fishing spot, but there are many others along the Turia River.
Please note that you need to purchase a day permit or be a member ("socio").

"In this section, you'll find three major species: rainbow trout (the dominant species that thrives in this environment), brown trout, and Comizo barbel."

When to fish there ?
As I mention in almost all my articles, the most favorable period for trout fishing is winter and spring when the fish are still very aggressive in defending their eggs, with clear water for sight fishing.
"On the first cast, I got a bite. On the second, I hooked one! A magnificent Rainbow Trout over 30 cm that I saw circling my lure and then lunging at it. The perfect start to the session!"

How to fish in Turia river ?
For me, it's a genuinely interesting stretch of water with pools and nice but not massive pools with easily accessible fish. Equipped with waders, you can navigate almost the entire section without leaving the water.
For fly fishermen, the spot is generally clear, and you can have a great time. On this particular day, I used my spinning rod for lure fishing.
"In general, I recommend using small 5 cm Jerkbaits, superdig type or slightly sinking because the currents aren't very strong (Cultiva from Owner works well)."

For the rapids or pools, I would recommend going with a basic option, which is a 1 or 2 cm spoon, which, of course, works very well.

"My best catch of the day at this spot: a magnificent brown trout measuring 38 cm! The water is crystal clear, and I saw it follow, prepare its attack, and then strike. An incredible adrenaline rush!"

What's the spot like ?
It's a highly productive stretch for three reasons:
Firstly, the river is well-suited for the development of rainbow trouts. This part of the Turia River is fed by the upstream Loriguilla Reservoir, which ensures stable water levels downstream and a constant water temperature throughout the year, which the trouts love.

Secondly, fishermen are relatively rare because when people think of fishing in Valencia, they don't typically think of trouts. Most fishermen turn to the sea or the surrounding large reservoirs teeming with big pike and black bass.
If you're coming with your family, I recommend this spot because there are many paths along the river and beautiful hikes in higher areas. This way, you can enjoy a superb environment and catch magnificent fish!

Things to know to prepare for your fishing day:
A fishing license is required for freshwater and saltwater fishing (two separate licenses). You can obtain these licenses at a fishing tackle shop. In Valencia, I went to Pesca Shop (Cabanyal aerea). Please note that it takes 24-48 hours to receive your license.
Check with the Club de Pescadores Deportivos La Rincona to purchase a day fishing permit. You can contact them at larincona.chulilla@gmail.com.
Fishing is allowed one hour before sunrise and one hour after sunset from the third Sunday in March to October 31st. From May to September, it's best to arrive as early as possible because the sun can become scorching for both you and the trout after 11 AM.
